A formal notification is expected to be issued shortly.
The new judges of the top court include Justice B V Nagarathna, who will be in line to be the first woman Chief Justice of India (CJI) in September 2027.
Besides, Justice Bela M Trivedi, Justice Hema Kohli, Justice C T Ravikumar, Justice M M Sundresh, and senior advocate and former Additional Solicitor General P S Narasimha are among the news judges in the apex court.
Justices Abhay Shreeniwas Oka, Vikram Nath and Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari are also among those appointed to the Supreme Court.
Earlier, the Prime Minister’s Office cleared the nine names recommended by the Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana. They were advised by the law ministry to undergo customary medical tests prior to issuance of warrants of appointment by the President.
This was the largest number of names recommended by the collegium at one go for appointment as judges of the SC and the quickest, within a week.
The appointments has also created another milestone in the country’s judicial history as Narasimha would be the first appointee directly from the bar to become CJI.
