ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s China-run Hambantota Port has discussed fertilizer transshipment with Russian billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko during a visit to the island.
Melnichenko is founded EuroChem, a Swiss-headquartered fertilizer group with extensive operations in Russia, former Soviet republics as well as some western nations and China.
He showed “keen interest in the potential to develop regional distribution of fertilizer via the Hambantota International Port,” Hambantota International Port said.
“This is well in line with the port’s plans as the Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) was already investigating possibilities in this regard,” Lance Zuo, General Manager Commercial and Marketing said in a statement.
Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG), which runs the port is part of China’s CM Ports.
The Port said it had already tied up with a fertilizer bagging company as part of a plan to expand bulk cargo business.
Transshipping fertilizer would be a step in the ports plans to be a regional hub, HIPG said.
HIPG is now involved in transshipping vehicles. (Colombo/Mar25/2021)
