NEW DELHI: Union labour and employment ministry will begin registering unorganised sector workers, including migrants, on the National Database for Unorganised Workers — the eShram — from Thursday, the day the portal is set to go live.
To begin with, the labour ministry has set a target of registering 3.5 crore unorganised workers for Bihar, 1.5 crore for Andhra Pradesh and 1.8 crore workers for Gujarat. The targets, which the government said in a presentation made to Central Trade Union leaders on Tuesday, will have to be met by December 31 this year. Assam, Chhattisgarh and Delhi have also been asked to complete 1 crore, 82 lakh and 52 lakh registrations, respectively in this time frame.
The portal, labour secretary Apurva Chandra said, aims to register 38 crore unorganised sector workers spanning construction workers, migrants, street vendors, domestic workers, agriculture sector workers, as well as, for the first time in any country, platform and gig workers.
Labour ministry officials said workers can register on eShram with their Aadhaar numbers and bank account details.
