Home minister Araga Jnanendra in Bengaluru indicated that a heinous case has been cracked by the Karnataka Police and details would be disclosed in the afternoon.
Police confirmed that all the five accused are residents of Sathyamangalam in Erode district of neighbouring Tamil Nadu. All six are habitual offenders and facing various criminal charges including robbery. The arrested are in their mid-20s. According to the police, they’re daily-wage earners and also habitual offenders. One of the accused is still at large.
An officer said the group regularly visited Mysuru and then returned to their place after robbing lone travellers, young couples and women of their valuables. They used to party on the hillock near Lalithadrinagar (north) locality after committing crime on their way back to Sathyamangalam via Chamarajanagar district.
This time they encountered the student couple. The accused group were under the influence of alcohol. The group dragged the couple to a secluded place where they raped the girl and assaulted her male companion. They also threatened the couple for nearly two hours and demanded Rs 3 lakh from them to let them free.
DG&IGP Praveen Sood on Thursday had hinted at solving the case quickly.
Survivor, her Classmate discharged
The 22-year-old survivor who was in hospital for three days was discharged from hospital late on Friday. She is said to have returned to her hometown Mumbai. Her classmate was discharged on Wednesday. Hospital sources confirmed both were medically fit for discharge.
