It is revealed that a considerable amount of vehicles plying on Sri Lankan roads are over a decade old.

According to data from the Department of Motor Traffic, over 08 million vehicles have been registered in the country by 2020 and a large number of them have been identified as old vehicles.

This detail has come into light despite the government suspending vehicle imports to secure dollar reserves, stating that there is a surplus of cars in Sri Lanka.

It has also been noted that due to improper maintenance, most of these vehicles have been emitting high levels of toxic gases.

Meanwhile, a study done by the University of Moratuwa and several other institutes have revealed that motor traffic contributes about 60% to the country’s air pollution.
