Embraer – Shapes The Future

WITH ITS STATE-OF-THE-ART E-JETS E2 FAMILY

The E195-E2, the world’s most efficient and quietest single aisle aircraft, will be on display at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) starting 23 May 2023.

The biggest Asia-Pacific maritime and aerospace exhibition will be home to a number of international industry leaders – this includes one of the world’s largest aircraft manufacturer, Embraer. Established in 1969, Embraer has stretched beyond its own limits and accomplished wonders in the aerospace industry.

Embraer’s latest commercial aviation jet, the E195-E2 will be on display at LIMA 2023. Asia Pacific Vice President of Embraer Commercial Aviation, Raul Villaron, shares with International Business Review the significance of the aircraft’s display at the Show and talks about Embraer’s growing commercial aviation presence in the APAC region.

Manufacturing Excellence

Embraer, a global aerospace company headquartered in Brazil, has made a name for itself as a leading manufacturer of aircraft for Commercial and Executive Aviation, Defence & Security, and Agricultural Aviation. With a workforce of around 18,000 employees across the globe, Embraer has delivered more than 8,000 aircraft since it was founded in 1969.

Today, its presence can be seen across the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe where industrial units, offices, distribution centres for parts and services are established to meet the global demand.

Over the years, Embraer has delivered more than 8,000 aircraft where on average, about every 10 seconds, an Embraer aircraft takes off somewhere in the world, transporting over 145 million passengers a year. In the last two decades alone, the company has designed, manufactured, certified, and entered into service 21 different aircraft platforms – an impressive feat that no other aircraft manufacturer has ever achieved.

The Changing of the Tides

As the leading manufacturer of commercial jets with up to 150 seats, Embraer is favoured by over 80 airlines across 50 countries for its E-Jets, Embraer’s leading commercial aircraft family. The E-Jets are operated by main line carriers in the US such as American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines including international airlines like Japan Airlines, Lufthansa, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, British

Airways, and Air France. More than 1,700 units of E-Jets have been delivered and Embraer expects this number to grow.

“Embraer is growing its footprint in Asia Pacific and China region, where we have close to 20 operators collectively operating around 200 E-Jets. In the past few years, we have seen an uptick in operators adding the E-Jets to their existing fleet of aircraft,” said Raul Villaron, Asia-Pacific Vice President of Embraer Commercial Aviation.

Recent airlines that have added E-Jets to their fleet include Bamboo Airways in Vietnam, Alliance Airlines in Australia, that operates certain flights on behalf of QantasLink and Star Air in India.

Raul Villaron reinforces this further, “We see a mindset change – airlines are shifting from the pre-held notion of single-fleet type to embrace the value of fleet flexibility. Fleet flexibility for airlines means having the diversity of aircraft types that gives the airline the choice to deploy aircraft of large or smaller capacity on a chosen route to match passenger demand. That includes the E-Jets, which have a capacity between 70 to 150 seats.”

This change can already be seen with Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, when the company announced in February 2023 its decision to add E190-E2s to its existing fleet. The E190-E2s will be deployed on short and medium-haul flights – from Singapore to non-metro destinations in the region.

The E-Jets E2 is Embraer’s latest generation of E-Jets. Embraer drew on the 20 million hours of experience gained from the first-generation E-Jets, which was one of the most successful commercial jets in the industry, to design the E190-E2 and E195-E2. This resulted in an advanced and modern aircraft that still maintain the reliability and maturity of its predecessors.

The E195-E2 is the most environmentally friendly aircraft in its class and is operated by airlines such as KLM, Helvetic Airways (Switzerland), Azul (Brazil) and most recently, Porter Airlines (Canada). With a capacity of up to 146 passengers, the E195-E2 which entered into service in 2019, is part of the latest E2 family that is shaping the regional market with its sustainable technologies, superior cabin comfort, excellent economics and optimal range. The aircraft has a range of 2,600nm, the equivalent of about seven hours of flight.

Embraer’s E195-E2 offers a cost per seat that is on par with the A320 or B737 that are prevalent in the region, providing a compelling solution for airlines. Additionally, its optimised capacity makes it an ideal aircraft for network expansion.

In 2004, Embraer designed the world’s first production airplane powered by biofuel. The Ipanema runs completely on ethanol and has since become the company’s testbed for electrification.

Sustaining Aviation through Sustainability

Embraer is committed to contributing to the aviation industry’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The company aims to be carbon neutral by 2040 and achieve carbon neutral growth from 2022. To achieve this, Embraer plans to implement 25 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) use in its operations by 2040 and 100 percent renewable energy sources by 2030.

This commitment to sustainability is reflected in Embraer’s E2 family of aircraft, the E190-E2 and the E195-E2: the world’s most efficient single-aisle aircraft. The Embraer’s E-Jets E2 aircrafts is leading the way in terms of operating performance and passenger comfort. With its sophisticated aerodynamics, novel wing design, and new technologies, the E2 family offers superior cabin comfort, excellent economics, and optimal range.

The aircraft features a 25 percent decrease in carbon emissions and fuel burn over the previous generation E-Jets, making them the most environmentally friendly aircraft in their class. In July 2022, Embraer and Pratt & Whitney conducted a successful test on an E195-E2 aircraft using 100 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). By using 100 percent SAF, the 25 percent emissions reduction of the E195-E2 over the first-generation E-Jets can be increased to an impressive 85 percent. Additionally, the aircraft showcased its ability to perform steep approaches by landing and taking off at London’s City Airport (LCY) shortly after the Farnborough International Airshow 2022.

“The E195-E2 is the most environmentally friendly aircraft in its class and is operated by airlines such as KLM, Helvetic Airways (Switzerland), Azul (Brazil) and most recently, Porter Airlines (Canada).”
