ECONOMYNEXT – Former MP Ajith Mannapperuma was sworn in as a new member of parliament today in place of Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) MP Ranjan Ramanayake whose seat was declared vacant this earlier week, parliamentary sources said.

Mannapperuma, who finished fifth in the Gampaha district from the SJB at the 2020 parliamentary polls, was sworn in before Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena this morning after the Election Commission (EC) named him for the controversially vacated seat.

The Secretary General of Parliament wrote to the Election Commission this week that Ramanayake’s seat has been rendered vacant owing to his extended absence. The actor-turned-politician is serving a four-year prison sentence over charges of contempt of court.

A gazette notification about Mannapperuma’s appointment was issued yesterday. (Colombo/Apr09/2021)
